The Best Time in Years to Buy in Spain

April 13th, 2010

From Ask the Experts in the Homes section of this week’s Sunday Times:

“My husband and I would like to buy a small holiday home in Spain – something with lots of character, in a traditional village, where we can take our young children. Where should we start?” – K Roberts, Essex.

Luckily for you, this is the best time in years to buy in Spain, with plenty of choice and good prices. Now that much of the corruption has been exposed, it is also safer than it was. First, you must decide where you want to buy. Assuming you don’t want to be too isolated, I would suggest the Mediterranean villages of Valencia or the whitewashed ones of Andalusia. Ideally, go there for a family holiday first. You haven’t told me your budget, but preliminary research online will give a rough idea of asking prices and whether you need a mortgage, taking into account the weak pound. Home loans are not easy to get in Spain at the moment, but you could try Lloyds, Halifax or Santander. Kyero.com is the best website for browsing properties for sale. Ensure you find an independent English-speaking lawyer (not one recommended by the estate agent) before looking at property in earnest. – Mark Stucklin

Thanks, Mark :) For those of you who don’t know, Mark Stucklin is the Spanish property expert for the Times newspaper and is, in my opinion, the one man in the know about all things relating to Spanish property. He’s also done much of the hard work for you and discovered these last few extraordinary apartments in Ibiza.

This weeks news stories don’t need much of an introduction from me – although I did spot another interesting one over on our current affairs blog entitled: Spanish Government Unveils 26 Anti-Crisis Measures.
