Girona Restaurant at the Top of World Cuisine

The Spanish restaurant ‘El Celler de Can Roca’, run by brothers Josep, Joan and Jordi Roca, has been named as the best restaurant in the world by the prestigious (but controversial) magazine ‘Restaurant’, in their list of ‘The World’s 50 Best Restaurants’.

With three Michelin stars, Girona’s gastronomic temple has managed to unseat the Dane Rene Redzepi, whose restaurant, Noma, has held the top spot for the last three years. In 2011, El Celler de Can Roca ranked fourth, behind The Fat Duck, while last year it achieved second place.

The Roca brothers’ establishment takes over the baton from El Bulli as the best restaurant in the world, two years after the restaurant, presided over by exalted local chef Ferran Adrià closed its doors to the public. Both located in Girona, the two establishments have demonstrated and maintained the highest prestige of Catalan and Spanish cuisine.

Named as third best restaurant on the Top 50 list is the Osteria Francescana (Modena, Italy), run by Massimo Bottura. Dropping from third to fourth place is Andoni Luis Aduriz with Mugaritz (San Sebastian), which sends D.O.M. (São Paulo) managed by Alex Atala (in the favourites to be number one this year) to sixth place.

New York’s Eleven Madison Park (last year in tenth place) moved up to fifth position. Rising to seventh place, from ninth, is Dinner by Heston Blumenthal (London), and remaining in eighth place is Arzak (San Sebastián).

“That three Spanish restaurants are among the world’s top ten is great news and shows that the avant-garde Spanish cuisine continues to lead, and that we are a country committed to gastronomy,” said Joan Roca.

For Ferran Adrià, who for years headed the other Spanish restaurant voted best in the world, El Bulli, the achievement of El Celler de Can Roca “is very important news for Spain and for tourism because it’s not just any prize, is the largest in the world, and proves Spain remains at the head of global gastronomy”. And he stressed that Girona is once again a great destination, “with El Celler de Can Roca and the soon to be opened elBulliFoundation”.

There are two more Spanish establishments among the top 50: Quique Dacosta (Denia, Alicante), in 26th place, and el Asador Etxebarri (Atxondo, Vizcaya) in 44th place.
