August Unemployment Drops For First Time Since 2000

According to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security, unemployment fell in the month of August for the first time since 2000, but only by 31 people. With this decline, unemployment accumulates six consecutive months of declines putting the number of unemployed in Spain at 4,698,783.
The data stands out as this month is usually bad for employment, as a result of the end of the summer season contracts. Unemployment figures for the month of August throughout the comparable series, from 1996, shows an average increase in unemployment of 27,439 people. In 2000, however, the number of people unemployed fell by 4,297.
Seasonally adjusted unemployment stood at 4,870,215, which represents 13,700 fewer unemployed than the seasonally adjusted unemployment figure registered in July.
In cumulative terms, in the first eight months of 2013, unemployment has fallen by 149,940 people, the best figure recorded in this period since 1999.
Secretary of State for Employment, Engracia Hidalgo, emphasised that the unemployment and hiring data for August are consistent with the positive development of other economic indicators, such as the improvement in expectations and competitiveness, “along with increased credibility in the economy”.
By sector, El Mundo reported that unemployment rose mainly in services, with 10,743 more unemployed (+0.37%), followed by industry, with 3,427 (+0.66%), while it fell in construction, with 2,816 less unemployed (-0.41%) and agriculture, with 2,165 (-1.10%).
Among the group without previous employment it fell by 9,220 people, -2.44%.
Among the under 25s, unemployment decreased by 9,199 (-2.21%) and in the group 25 years of age and over it increased by 9,168 (+0.21%).
Male unemployment rose by 1,229 (+0.05%) to a total of 2,288,893, and female unemployment fell by 1,260 (-0.05%) to 2,409,890.
Year-on-year, male unemployment fell by 2,650 (-0.12%) and female unemployment increased by 75,799 (+3.25%).
The number of foreigners unemployed fell by 11,246 in August (-2.01%) and by 37,695 in a year (-6.44%), bringing the total number of unemployed among this group to 547,469.
Unemployment rose in nine regions, led by Valencia (+4,902) and Murcia (+2,692), and fell in eight, especially in Andalusia (-4,674) and the Canary Islands (-4,294).
